Everything You'll Need For Your
Glacier National Park Elopement
GLACIER NATIONAL PARK  in northwestern Montana is a renowned wedding destination, and for good reason! Its lofty peaks, turquoise rivers, and stunning views make it a stunning backdrop for your dream elopement. I love shooting elopements in the park, and the number one question that I get when helping my couples plan for their elopement is “What should I bring?” so in this guide I’ll give you the rundown on everything you’ll need to bring with you for your big day in the park. Whether you’re a local and want to be prepared, or an out-of-stater who isn’t sure what to pack, this guide is for you!
ATTIRE
First things first, you two will need your dream outfits! You will need an outfit that not only looks amazing but that you’re totally comfortable in. You’ll also want to have freedom of movement on your big day so be sure to find something that will allow you both to hike and explore Glacier. Be sure to bring layers as well, as the temperature drops quite quickly in the evening, even in the middle of summer. I would also recommend hiking boots or footwear with good tread. Some couples opt to wear outdoor sandals between shots as they walk to and from locations, and swap out for their photo footwear when they’re ready. Whatever makes you most comfortable and keeps you safe! If you’re wearing jewelry, be sure that they are secure and won’t fall off during your shoot. You may also want to bring makeup for touch-ups, hairspray, dry shampoo, a comb, and a compact mirror to keep you looking your best the whole day.
DETAILS
You should also bring any invitations, save the dates, announcements or any other stationary with you to your elopement shoot. You can bring them along for some unique flat-lay shots. Be sure to bring your vows, rings and any other special details for these shots as well. You will also need your marriage certificate, and a favorite pen to sign it if you plan to sign it after your ceremony in the park.

PERMITS
A slightly more daunting requirement for your day is the permit necessary to elope in the park, but don't worry! It's simpler than it seems. You've got this! You will need to choose your location from the list provided here and file for a permit with the Park Service, which you can do here. You will also need to file for your marriage license - I recommend filing with Flathead County’s Clerk of Court. They’re the closest office to Glacier and you can save time by filing for your certificate online beforehand. When you’re ready to pick up your license, be sure to bring $53 cash or check (or $55.31 credit) for the filing fee!
OTHER ODDS 'N ENDS
Some other essentials for your big day in the park are water and snacks (and maybe some champagne to celebrate too). These are essential if you’ll be in the park for a whole or half-day elopement, as there are only a few places to find food in and around the park, and during peak season availability is limited so don't count on food being available. Another thing to consider if you've chosen a more secluded ceremony space or are shooting further from the road and others is a can of bear spray. Your photographer/videographer should be carrying some as well, but bring some for yourself just in case a big fuzzy guest decides to crash your vow exchange! Just be aware that bear spray cannot be taken onto commercial flights, so purchase some on your way into the park. For protection against a much smaller assailant, bring bug spray. During late spring into summer this area experiences a huge surge of mosquitos and other flying pests, and if you’re anything like me you’ll need extra strength bug spray to escape itch-free during that time. For my fair skinned brides and grooms I recommend sunscreen, especially for bare shoulders! If you want to be extra prepared, you may also find a sewing kit handy in a pinch.
That’s everything you will need for a safe, amazing day eloping with your best friend in some of the most stunning landscapes this country has to offer. You can download my free packing checklist here. If you haven’t decided a photographer yet, I would love to be considered! I offer elopement packages and as a local to the Flathead Valley I also love to offer advice and guidance on all things Glacier elopements.
